Preselected mixed box from Phipps Brewery
A fresh interpretation of the classic Phipps style of sweet, golden ales but using modern aromatic Amarillo hops. This fruity session ale is inspired by the famous water meadows that lie between our home town of Northampton and the meandering River Nene. This beer is perfect companion for lazy summer days by the river or in the pub garden. Listed as one of Britain's top ten beers in the Good Beer Guide 2018.
Brewed to an authentic 1860s recipe, it is a golden beer relying solely on the pale ale malt in its grist for its colour. The classic blend of Goldings and Fuggles hops gives the characteristic English ale flavours to this full-bodied beer. The IPA was the premier Phipps pint in the company’s heyday, the most distinctive Northamptonshire beer brewed to suit the county’s water and tastes, a very drinkable pint and our flagship brew today.
Steam Roller was the first new brew to emerge from the region’s oldest new brewery; a burnished copper coloured pint which rolls over the taste buds leaving a smooth finish of toffee and caramel. As the flavours fade away, a hint of smokey notes lingers. Not far from The Albion Brewery stood the steam roller and traction engine works of William Allchin where these mighty beasts were made from 1847 to 1925.
A special brew to commemorate the 850th anniversary of Thomas Becket's trial in Northampton. This mahogany coloured ale has a floral hoppiness, balanced with the sweetness of Northamptonshire honey. Honey was a staple ingredient of mediaeval ales and our brewery sits in a part of the old town of Northampton where there is evidence of commercial brewing going back to Becket’s days.
Another classic Phipps ale from the 1950s, this big beast of a blended brown ale was always the perfect marriage of Ratliffe’s Stout and Gold Star. The hoppiness of Phipps signature ales cuts through the smooth body of a creamy stout.
Phipps brewery was built on two great beers, Phipps IPA and Ratliffe's Stout. This fresh modern development marries the dark chocolate malt grist of Ratliffes with the subtle fruity hop selection of the IPA. Like all Phipps beers, Black Star is an eminently drinkable and balanced brew with a smooth creamy body supporting a surprisingly hoppy finish. Is it and ale? is it a stout? is it a porter? who can say!, it certainly is a fine pint of beer that rewards the adventurous drinker.
A strong export pale ale. This was the last new recipe developed by Phipps in the late ‘50s and the first local brew to be axed by Watneys as being far too good to go up against their keg varieties. We revived this beer in May 2014 to mark our return to brewing in Northampton after 40 years away. The ale displays the distinct Phipps family attributes of a golden hue and subtle sweetness.
